Årets chef 2019 i Huddinge kommun: Mrs. Julie Kelly

Årets chef 2019 i Huddinge kommun: Mrs. Julie Kelly

IES Länna’s beloved principal, Mrs. Julie Kelly, was honored by Huddinge kommun as Årets chef 2019 (Leader of the Year 2019) on March 5, 2020.

Mrs. Kelly was one of three finalists for Manager of the Year. During the autumn term, parents, students, and colleagues could nominate teachers and school leaders they believed had gone above-and-beyond during the previous year. A jury of local politicians selected finalists who were celebrated at a gala where the winners were announced.

Mr. Pajouhi, IES Länna’s IT Coordinator, and Ms. McCabe, Year 4 math and science teacher, attended the gala with Mrs. Kelly.

“I met Mrs. Kelly in January of 2019. She had traveled to Canada to look for potential teachers to come work at IES Länna. I knew very little about Sweden, IES, teaching or living in another country but what I did know was that having Mrs. Kelly as a leader meant I would be okay,” Ms. McCabe recalls.

“Now, here I was, a year later watching her accept the award for Årets chef. In that moment, the rest of the audience got to see what I already knew. They got to see a woman who leads by example, a leader who has created and works hard to maintain an environment where staff and students feel respected, safe and welcome everyday.”

“Mr. Kelly was very stressed. I have never seen her that stressed before!” Mr. Pajouhi said about the evening. “I kept joking with her that she needed to prepare her speech because she was going to win, and she kept saying no! But I knew she was going to win so I moved to get a better angle of the stage to take pictures.”

Although the award ceremony seems like it was a long time ago (and a lot of world-changing things have happened since then), make sure you congratulate Mrs. Kelly again. She truly is the best principal and IES Länna is lucky to have her as our leader.

Introducing IES Länna's House Competition

Introducing IES Länna's House Competition

This year at IES Länna we will be introducing our very own house competition. The purpose for this is to raise school spirit outside of classroom learning and develop fun and healthy competition amongst students and staff (possibly even families). There is a big emphasis on participation ; for students to have the opportunity to try a range of academic, sporting and cultural events throughout the year. There will also be theme days in which students are able to dress in theme and earn points for their house.

Each student and staff member has been randomly placed in one of the four houses (a big thank you goes to Ms Unander-Scharin for her time put into the placement of everyone). Each house has a primary colour; red, blue, yellow and green and while they are not named yet, the very first house competition is for the students to design the house logos with a connected name based on a native Swedish animal. We wanted this to be a way for students to take ownership and feel connected to their houses.

We encourage families to get involved and encourage the participation from students for the theme days and events as they come throughout the school year.

We will send out more information and dates of theme days and events but if you have any specific questions feel free to contact me via email.

Thanks for your support within this exciting new area of our school.

Class Information

Class Information

All students have been placed in classes and emails were sent out yesterday and this morning with information about mentors. Due to technical difficulties, you may have received the email twice (possibly even with “TEST” as the subject line), but the information in the body of the email is correct.

You can also see what class your child is in and who their mentor is on SchoolSoft. If you do not have a SchoolSoft login or do not remember it, do not fear! New students/parents will receive login information on the first day of school. If you are a returning parent, please email Ms. Fredrika Unander-Scharin and she will help you reset your password.

Due to GDPR laws, we cannot release class lists. Please use the first day of school to meet your new classmates. We do not alter the class lists once they are set.

With comments or questions, please contact the Vice Principal, Mr. Henric Ljung.

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

Dear parents and guardians,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! I hope you all had a restful summer with plenty of sunshine, relaxation and time with your families.

To our returning students and parents, welcome back! We're excited to see how you've grown and hear all about your summer break. We're also looking forward to working with you in your new classes and building on all the values we worked on last year.

To our new students and parents, welcome to IES Länna! As I've told many of you before, IES Länna is not a "regular" school. You and your child will have a special experience here and it will be challenging at times. We are, however, ready to support you with those challenges. What an exciting journey it will be!

Please note the following start and finish times for the first day of school:

Year 4: 8.15 to 13.50

Welcome from Mrs. Kelly on schoolyard at 8.15. Parents are welcome to stay for information from the mentors and leadership team until 10.00. Students will be dismissed at 13.50 so their mentors can escort them to the bus stop or to Junior Club. Junior Club is free and open to everyone in Years 4-5 during the first week of school. More information about how to register and pay has been/will be sent by administration.

Years 5-6: 9.00 to 14.00

Years 7-8: 9.30 to 14.15

Year 9: 10.00 to 14.30

All year groups will start on the schoolyard with a welcome from Mrs. Kelly and the school leadership.

Students will follow their normal schedules. Schedules will be handed out on the first day of school and will also be available via SchoolSoft.

As always, a member of the leadership team will be outside supervising the schoolyard from 7.45 each morning (8.15 on Mondays due to our later start that day). We love spending this time outside with the children and waving to the parents, so please use this as a guide to when you can drop your child off even before you receive his/her schedule.

With any questions, please contact Ms. Unander-Scharin at info.lanna@engelska.se or 08-20 90 15, or me directly at julie.kelly.lanna@engelska.se or 076 852 0401.

Enjoy the last days of your summer holidays, and I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Big hugs,

Mrs. Kelly

Reception & Main Entrance Closed Everyday from 16:00

Reception & Main Entrance Closed Everyday from 16:00

Dear Parents & Students,

For your information the reception & main entrance to the school will from today be open from 08:00-16:00 Monday-Friday. This means that if a student is not in an after-school activity, extra class, or Junior Club they will have to leave the school before this time. Also if they are outside playing they need to make sure they have their belongings with them as they will not be able to enter the school again after 16:00. The reception phone line (08-209015) is also open between these times and after this time you can leave a voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

If you have an urgent matter outside of these hours you can contact the teacher/management directly. If you have a meeting booked after this time the staff member who has booked the meeting will meet you at the main entrance.

Kind regards,

From the Principal

Spring Update from Mrs. Kelly

Spring Update from Mrs. Kelly

Dear parents and guardians,

Thanks for all your support during these past months! We have seen tremendous growth and progress in our students, and it is thanks to your support and positivity at home. We love working with you!

Please continue watching our "Tuesday Talks" on YouTube so you can reinforce the topics and messages we discuss at school. They are usually on one of our four core values: respect, hard work, safety and honesty.

As we end our first year, we begin to plan our second. We will grow from 410 students (13 classes in grades 4-8) to 510 students (16 classes in grades 4-9). We will only add classes in grade 4 with the new students coming in. We will also fill empty places in the other classes, so if you have plans to move or change schools we would appreciate knowing that as soon as possible.

Plans for skolavslutning will also be shared soon so you can plan accordingly.

Please note that I will not be approving leave for students that is over three days. If you have an issue, please contact me directly and we can discuss it.

Lastly, reception will be open from 8.00 to 16.00 each day, and the phone number is: 08-20 90 15.

Thanks for everything you do to support your child. We appreciate it so much. Glad påsk!

Julie Kelly
