IES Football Tournament Winners!

On Wednesday the 13th of February, the mixed-senior Länna football team competed in our second inter-school indoor tournament against other IES schools; Bromma, Liljeholmen & Täby. We were the only team without 9th graders, and guess what, we won!

Our students did an excellent job playing together as a real team and going undefeated all the way. The finals were dramatic, ending 1-1, going into extra time and then on to penalties. We scored all our penalties and our keeper made the necessary saves to win it all!

Senior Handball Inter-School Tournament

On Friday the 8th of February 2019 the mixed-senior Länna team participated in a Handball Tournament.

It was hosted at Bromma Sporthallen.

Three IES schools participated: Liljeholmen, Bromma and Länna.

 

We played a round-robin style tournament resulting in three very tight games but resulting in losses.

The Länna team played their hearts out and show cased their amazing skills and talent.

 

We look forward to participating in the next Handball tournament.

The Länna team was made up of seven players: Andreas 7A, Harleen 7A, Johannes 7C, Safin 7C, Elsa 7C, Jack 7C, Vilgot 8A.

Spanish Cooking Project

Spanish Cooking Project

IES Länna Spanish teachers, Mr. Diego Ulloa and Ms. Ema Zejnilovic, created a cooking project for their seventh grade students. It was hugely successful! Read more about the experience below:

The kitchen can offer us the opportunity as teachers to carry out different teaching-learning methodologies. Today's students demand from us, as teachers, new challenges that inspire learning in a more playful way. This is how cooking offers us the opportunity to connect curricular contents with novel and fun situations for students.

In this context, the seventh year students from IES Länna worked on a culinary project based on how to keep a healthy life. In the final stage of this project, they had to work in the kitchen, following the recipe and recording a tutorial video showing the whole process in Spanish. A lot of skills were worked on and developed in this context:

  • Teamwork: Everyone has a specific role according to their abilities and everyone is of vital importance. Within this, there are always rules of respect and decision making, which will encourage teamwork in students.
  • Healthy Habits: It is not only about acquiring good eating habits, health and hygiene, but also about maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships, where respect plays a predominant role.
  • Scientific thinking: the kitchen, as an experimental laboratory, allows students to put into practice the scientific method from a recipe, looking for explanations to phenomena, confirming hypotheses or following steps to obtain results.
  • Logical-mathematical thinking: conversions of units, problems that involve adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are an important part of this process as well.

This project also provides an opportunity to develop the students' imagination, in a safe environment that can work to alleviate the stress of learning a second language.

“I liked it (the activity) so much, because it allowed us to have fun while learning Spanish. Before getting to the kitchen, we had gone through a long process in which we practice our writing, reading, listening and speaking skills, so I can say we improved our Spanish abilities a lot”, said Max 7B.

Another student, Olivia 7B, explained that “despite the fact of having one of our team members sick for one week, we were able to have everything done on time and it was a complete success to us; we had a lot of fun from the very beginning to the very end!” She added that it was great for them to have a folder with self and co-evaluation sheets, so they were able to assess their own performances, as well as their peers in each lesson.

Den 21:e februari kommer vi på skolan ha en dag kallad “Pink Shirt Day” där vi uppmanar elever att ha på sig en rosa tröja. Detta för att uppmärksamma hur enkelt det kan vara att stå upp för varandra genom små gester, små gester som kan betyda allt för någon. Här nedan kan ni läsa ett utdrag ur en artikel som förklarar varför vi väljer att ha pink shirt day.   

On the 21st of February we are having a “Pink Shirt Day” where we encourage students to wear a pink shirt. We do this to highlight how easy it is to stand up for others by making small actions—small actions that can mean everything to someone. Below you can read a draft from an article that explains why we do pink shirt day.

“David Shepherd, Travis Price and their teenage friends organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied [for wearing a pink shirt]…[They] took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school. ‘I learned that two people can come up with an idea, run with it, and it can do wonders,’ says Mr. Price, 17, who organized the pink protest. ‘Finally, someone stood up for a weaker kid.’ So Mr. Shepherd and some other headed off to a discount store and bought 50 pink tank tops. They sent out message to schoolmates that night, and the next morning they hauled the shirts to school in a plastic bag. As they stood in the foyer handing out the shirts, the bullied boy walked in. His face spoke volumes. ‘It looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders,’ Mr. Price recalled. The bullies were never heard from again.”
